The Lancashire tapestry

COMMISSIONED BY THE LORD LIEUTENANT AND DEPUTY LIEUTENANTS

A commission by The Lord Lieutenant and local industry leaders to mark the Platinum Jubilee, for June 2022. For six months, Holman recorded the voices of 70 people across Lancashire who are 70 years old and over, collecting their stories and their recollections of the seven decades of Queen Elizabeth II’s reign. The result is a moving representation of the diverse Lancastrian communities and the extraordinary individuals who best remember her lifetime of service.

The recordings were produced to create a poetic soundscape that accompanied an installation of a monumental 19 metre tapestry, weaving each individual story recounted into the very fabric of the artwork. The tapestry will be hung on a specially fabricated horse show frame that will surround the audience who will hear the small and large memories of modern Britain across an eight channel audio mix that moves around the work.

The immersive installation was shown at Blackburn Cathedral June 1st – November 30th before touring Lancashire.

The tapestry is a reference towards the global traditions of commemorating our past in textile from the Bayeux Tapestry to The Devonshire Hunting Tapestries and have been produced in Lancashire by premier weaving mills, John Spencer Textiles and Herbert Parkinson Textiles.
